Charlton 1 Hull City 0 – Addicks miss out on League One play-offs on goal difference

Charlton Athletic saw their League One play-off hopes ended despite a 1-0 victory over League One champions Hull City.

The Addicks were reliant on Oxford United and Portsmouth slipping up to open the door for them to claim sixth spot in the table. And while Pompey lost 1-0 at home to Accrington, former Addicks manager Karl Robinson saw his U’s charges demolish Burton Albion 4-0 to finish above the South Londoners on goal difference.

Charlton’s winner came 15 minutes from time. Liam Millar produced a ball in that was horrible to defend and Jacob Greaves’ touch made sure it rolled into his net.

The Addicks were full value for maximum points and were the side asking the attacking questions in the second period with Jayden Stockley’s header clipping the top of the crossbar with Millar also seeing a right-footed strike narrowly clear the upright.

The only time that Hull created a really clear chance was in the opening five minutes but keeper Ben Amos came out to make an excellent block on Josh Magennis.

Hull keeper Matt Ingram produced a point-blank save to deny Ryan Inniss in the closing stages as the centre-back met Albie Morgan’s corner at the back post.

It was a fifth win for Adkins in the 10 matches he has had in charge – only losing one of them.

It was Charlton’s home form which cost them a top-six finish as they took 31 points from their 23 fixtures at The Valley. They were 17th in the table for home form going into the game.
