Millwall boss Rowett outlines future plan with Jed Wallace

Jed Wallace is set to continue playing in a more central attacking role for Millwall next season.

The 27-year-old scored 10 goals for the Lions in the 2020-21 campaign and manager Gary Rowett used him through the middle at times in the run-in.

The Millwall chief said: “You look at players when you come into a club and I felt as though Jed was the most talented player, it just seemed a waste seeing him defending like a full-back in the defensive third.

“Part of changing to a 5-2-3 formation was to get Jed further forward and to allow him to not to drop too far defensively so that he was away from the striking positions.

“I see him as a central player anyway. To be fair, when he plays wide he dips inside and into little pockets all the time anyway.

“For a player like Jed you have to give them that little bit of freedom to not be too caged into an area of the pitch.

“All the type of players we’re looking at, and want to sign, are all quite central. But they are also flexible players, who can just as easily go wide for 20 minutes if needed.”

Wallace has netted 31 goals in the last four Championship seasons – also hitting double figure in the 2019-20 season.

He is due to be a free agent next summer.
