Van Aanholt will link up with former Eagles boss Frank de Boer, who managed the South London club for just five games in 2017, before being replaced by Roy Hodgson.

On his call up to the squad, van Aanholt posted this message on Instagram: “Let no man forget how menacing we are, we are Lions. An honour to represent my country.”

The 30-year-old made his international debut on the November 19, 2013 – a 0-0 draw with Colombia.

Former Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has also been included in the squad.

Before the Euros get underway on June 11, De Boer’s side will host Scotland and Georgia in international friendlies.

The Netherlands are one of the tournament hosts and their first fixture is against Ukraine at the Johan Crujff Arena in Amsterdam on Saturday June 13.

They are in Group C, and will face Austria, Ukraine and North Macedonia.
