Clean sweep of the top honours as Joe Pigott claims all three senior Player of the Year awards
Joe Pigott has swept the board for the main honours at AFC Wimbledon’s end-of-season awards.
The striker recently confirmed he would be leaving the Dons when his contract expires at the end of this month.
Pigott scored 20 league goals in the 2020-21 campaign.
He has been voted the winner of three awards – Player of the Year, Radio WDON Player of the Year and Junior Dons’ Player of the Year.
The WDON trophy – also known as the ‘Route 66 Banana Receptical of Love’ – is voted for by the commentary team.
Pigott gained 51.26 per cent of the votes for the Player of the Year award, with fans voting for the winner.
Ayoub Assal received 41.73 per cent of the vote to win Young Player of the Year. Jack Rudoni gained 41.15 per cent, making it an extremely close call.
Pigott announced at the end of last month that he would not be re-signing with the Dons.
He said: “This has been the toughest decision of my career and I’ve decided that I will be looking for a new challenge.
“Firstly, it’s been an absolute privilege to play for this club as it represents exactly what the game is about – the fans. To not play in front of a packed Plough Lane is something that upsets me. Your support to me since my debut against Blackpool has been amazing.
“The rise this club has had since reforming has been remarkable and to help play a part in stabilising the club in League One has been a pleasure. It hasn’t been easy at times, but the spirit of the club always shined through in the end. Everyone at the club should be very excited for the future.
“The memories I have, including Bradford away, will stay with me forever. There are too many people to thank specifically and to name one would be unfair. I will miss everyone working at the club dearly. I’m sad to be leaving my home, but excited for what the future holds. I’m sure we will cross paths soon. Will miss you all.”
