Police watchdog investigates after woman, 25, dies in Brixton after cop car impact

A young woman has died after she was hit by a marked police car responding to a 999 emergency call.

Witnesses said the 25-year-old pedestrian was crossing the road when she was struck and thrown into the air at about 11.20pm on Wednesday.

When the police car came to a stop, two officers jumped out and tried to save the woman, a witness said.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate her before she was pronounced dead at the scene in Stockwell Road, Brixton. The driver was left distraught at the roadside afterwards, being comforted by colleagues.

The Metropolitan Police said the incident had been referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is now carrying out an independent investigation.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “We have begun an independent investigation into the circumstances of a police collision in South London in which, sadly, a 25-year-old woman died.

“We were notified by the Metropolitan Police that at around 11.20pm on Wednesday 9 June in Stockwell Road, London SW9, a police vehicle on an emergency call was in collision with the female pedestrian

“Despite the efforts of the London Ambulance Service, she died at the scene.

“Our investigators attended the scene of the collision and the post-incident procedures where the officers involved provided their initial accounts.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and all of those affected.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said in a statement: “Officers were called at approximately 11.20pm on Wednesday 9 June to Stockwell Road, SW9 to a collision involving a marked police vehicle on an emergency call and a female pedestrian.

“A 25-year-old woman was treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services, the woman sadly died at the scene. Next of kin have been informed.

“Cordons remain at the location and traffic is being diverted.

“Road closures are in place in a number of surrounding streets, including Brixton Road, Stockwell Road and Landor Road.

“The incident, as is usual in such situations, has been notified to the Directorate of Professional Standards.

“It has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is now carrying out an independent investigation.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 11.22pm on Wednesday 9 June to reports of a road traffic collision in Stockwell Road, SW9.

“We sent two ambulances, a medic in a response car, an incident response officer and London’s Air Ambulance to the scene.

“Sadly, despite our efforts a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.”
