“Unfinished business” – Jayden Stockley completes permanent move to Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic have made Jayden Stockley their first signing of the summer – with the striker joining from Preston North End for an undisclosed fee.

Portsmouth, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday were also interested in the targetman. The former agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £450,000, for the 27-year-old.

But our Friday edition of the South London Press made clear that Stockley’s only desire was a return to Charlton after a hugely productive spell on loan in the second half of last season.

He has signed a three-year contract with the Addicks.

“I’m very pleased that my journey at Charlton isn’t over,” Stockley told Charlton’s official website. “I have loved my time here and now I’ll get the chance to play in front of the fans and experience The Valley properly.

“We just missed out on a play-off place on goal difference last season, so there is some unfinished business – I just can’t wait to get started.”

Stockley is also the first signing made by Nigel Adkins since he succeeded Lee Bowyer in the Valley hotseat.

”I’m delighted we’ve signed Jayden,” said Adkins. “He was a crucial part of our strong finish to last season.

“The Charlton fans will already be very aware of what he brings – he works hard when we are in and out of possession, he brings others into play well, he has a lot of quality on the ball and he brings us goals. He’s also a fantastic character, someone who is great to have around the dressing room, so I am looking forward to continue working with him.”

Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard added: “Jayden came in January and made a big difference for us, he was popular with the fans, players and staff.

“Given his form and track record, there was understandably interest in signing him from our promotion rivals. He wanted to play for Charlton Athletic though and we wanted him here, so I am pleased we’ve been able to sign him permanently. I am sure the fans will give him a warm welcome when he finally gets to play in front of our supporters at The Valley.”
