QPR midfielder Charlie Owens handed new 12-month deal

Charlie Owens says he wants to repay everyone who has stuck by him after he signed a new one-year deal at QPR, until the summer of 2022.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been with the R’s for four years after signing from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017.

Owens has struggled for game time due to a persistent knee injury.

“To sign this new deal is very pleasing,” Owens told QPR’s website. “The whole of my last contract I spent in the gym, so I am hugely grateful to Les Ferdinand and the gaffer for giving me more time to show what I can do. I just want to repay them now.

“It has been extremely tough [my spell on the sidelines]. I have been off the radar for a long time. The club recently put out a video showing the work Luke [Amos] and I have been doing and it’s good for the fans to see that. It’s not only tough physically, it’s tough mentally.

“I have been training for two or three months, building up from the physios to sports science to working one-on-one with Chris Ramsey.

“I’ve got used to playing football but I need that contact now, and this week was the first first time I’ve had that.

“I was getting stuck in but I am still probably shying away from it a little bit, but that will come back with each training session.

“The lads certainly aren’t going easy on me, and I don’t want them to either! I just want to be seen as a normal player again. That’s all I want.

“It has meant a lot to me how they [the club] have stuck by me. I am not established, I have only played a handful of games, but they have always backed me.

“I just want to get through pre-season in one piece, do the best I can and repay everyone that has believed in me. I am not young anymore, it is time for me to start playing.”
