Surrey sign Durham all-rounder Cameron Steel on two-year deal
Surrey have signed Cameron Steel from Durham on a two-year contract, which will run to the end of 2023. The leg spinning all-rounder will join the Oval outfit on loan for the remainder of this season.
Steel, who has played 41 first-class matches – averaging 29.08 with the bat and 30.38 with the ball – will make his Surrey debut in Thursday’s Royal London One-Day Cup clash with Yorkshire at Scarborough.
After playing for Durham MCCU in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the California-born 25-year-old signed professional terms with Durham in 2017.
In his first season he became the youngest double-centurion in Durham history, by hitting 224 against Leicestershire.
He made 160 in 2018 against a high-quality Sussex attack including Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan and Ollie Robinson in a match in which no other batsman managed more than 47.
Steel has enjoyed two excellent performances against Surrey’s second team this season, scoring 134 in a four-day friendly in April and taking 4-20 in a T20 at the Oval in June. He has also spent three of the last four Australian summers in grade cricket in Perth with Claremont Nedlands Cricket Club, where he took 41 wickets during the 2020-21 season.

Director of cricket Alec Stewart added: “I’m pleased that Cameron will join us at Surrey. As a player that can bat anywhere in the top order and bowls leg spin, he adds balance to the squad and I look forward to seeing him perform in a Surrey shirt over the coming years.”
