Charlton Athletic assistant boss explains absence of Jayden Stockley + discusses first friendly game time for Ryan Inniss

Charlton assistant manager Johnnie Jackson has revealed that a “bad stomach” kept Jayden Stockley out of today’s 1-1 draw with Reading.

The centre-forward played no part in Berkshire with Josh Davison starting through the middle with Diallang Jaiyesimi and Conor Washington in wider attacking roles.

Jackson said that they were not prepared to risk Stockley after a “sleepless night”.

“It was an opportunity for Josh and he has grabbed it,” Jackson told the club’s website. “He’s run himself into the ground. His hold-up play was excellent. He’s going to run all day for you and do what you ask.”

Centre-back Inniss had his first involvement in pre-season as he featured for the opening 30 minutes.

“It’s been stop-start so far for Ryan as far as pre-season, we’ve had to manage him really carefully,” said Jackson. “It was always the plan for him to play 30 minutes, as his first minutes of pre-season.

“I’m sure he was a little bit keen to get a few more, but we made a real detailed plan with him to try and get him to the starting line at Sheffield Wednesday. To see him come through 30 minutes was brilliant. Same with Akin [Famewo], he’s got a good hour under his belt – again part of the plan.

“We knew what we wanted from every player today. They have all managed to come through apart unfortunately for Ben Purrington, who has had to come off early with an injury. We need to take stock of him and reassess to see how bad it is. Hopefully it is not too bad.”

Charlton head to Crystal Palace on Tuesday before finishing up their prep at Fulham’s Craven Cottage next weekend.

Asked about the minutes that players could get against the Eagles, Jackson replied: “It’s going to be really individually tailored. We’re going to have to see what comes out of today – what niggles, how people feel on Monday.

“And between these two games we’ll work out what we feel is the best plan for each and every player to get them in a position to be on the start line against Sheffield Wednesday.

“It will be a collaboration between us as coaches, the manager, sports science and the medical team to put together the minutes, the plans, for every player that gets the best out of them in these two games to help us beat Sheffield Wednesday.
