Millwall boss Rowett: This could have been an important benchmark for us

Gary Rowett was pleased with his side’s performance as they rounded off their opening fan pre-season games with a victory against Ipswich Town.
A brace from Benik Afobe and a Jed Wallace effort gave the Lions a comfortable 3-0 win in front of 900 or so Millwall fans at Portman Road.
Rowett said. “We have another game Wednesday which will give players some minutes at the training ground but I think this is the our benchmark kind of game. We are always going to judge the team a little bit – the fans were always going to judge the team a bit – on a game against a top League One team that are spending a little bit of money to try and see if they can get back [to the Championship].
“There is a lot of ambition here at Ipswich and Cookie [Paul Cook] will do really really well. I thought we were good, really, really good, I thought we moved the ball well, I thought we looked comfortable in possession.
“We mixed the game up really well, more importantly we didn’t always try and play, we tried to use that little bit of possession to build and then use those little bits of space to get us ahead. The likes of Jed coming back, Sav, Kieftenbled, Hutchy, just add that extra little bit to open some of those areas up. Really pleased, scored some good goals, nice to keep a clean sheet but of course lots of things to work on in the week from today’s game and the rest of pre-season.”
