Charlton boss on Diallang Jaiyesimi’s quiet shift at Oxford + Conor Washington off and running in the scoring stakes

Nigel Adkins says that it is down to all of his Charlton squad to ensure Diallang Jaiyesimi is in the thick of the action.

The right-winger touched the ball just eight times in Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Oxford United, comfortably the fewest of any player who started the match.

Asked if Jaiyesimi could have done any more to ensure he was more involved before his withdrawal for Josh Davison, Adkins replied: “Ultimately we want to pass the ball quickly and with a purpose.

“And that purpose is to get into the attacking third of the pitch, get our creative players on the ball and then it’s about getting the ball in the POMO [positions of maximum opportunity] and putting the ball in the back of the net.

“DJ didn’t touch the ball enough, so as a team we’ve got to identify that. We’ve all got to say ‘how can we get him on the ball?’. That’s what we’ve got to do – get him on the ball in good areas of the pitch.”

Conor Washington scored Charlton’s first goal of the new campaign. The Northern Ireland international converted from the spot after Jayden Stockley’s attempt was handled.

Adkins said: “The goalkeeper has made a fantastic save from him [earlier in the first half] and there are several other opportunities where he is in good areas and, to be fair, there was some good defending from Oxford.

“On another day he could have scored some more goals.”
