Crystal Palace boss Vieira asked about reports of £5m bid for Watford’s Will Hughes

Crystal Palace head coach Patrick Vieira has addressed the current situation around the transfer speculation of Watford midfielder Will Hughes.

Hughes, who won promotion to the Premier League with Watford in the summer, has yet to agree on a new contract with Xisco Munoz’s side, and with less than 12 months left on his current deal, the 26-year-old will be allowed to leave on a free transfer next year.

In midweek, there were reports that Vieira’s side had an offer of £5million rejected for Hughes, who has been training with the Hornets’ U23 side and missed the opening day win against Aston Villa.

When asked about the transfer links to Hughes and if he was hopeful of getting him over the line, Vieira said: “With all the respect, I am never going to mention players who are at another football club.”

Hughes began his career with Derby County in 2011, spending six years with the Rams before departing for Watford in 2017.

With the Hornets, Hughes became Marco Silva’s first signing, joining for a fee believed to be in the region of around £8m.

He has made 107 appearances at Vicarage Road and has been capped by England at U17 and U21 level.
