Nigel Adkins provides update on Ryan Inniss after early withdrawal against Crewe – and explains reason for George Dobson’s absence

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Nigel Adkins hopes there’s no major concerns after defender Ryan Inniss was withdrawn an hour into today’s 2-0 win over Crewe.

The centre-half, who suffered from a long-term quad problem last season, had his minutes managed through pre-season but has started all of the Addicks’ league games this campaign. He was replaced by youngster Deji Elerewe after going down for treatment inside the Charlton half.

When asked if there was anything to be concerned about with Inniss, Adkins explained: “He was a little bit uncomfortable but hopefully nothing too serious. Then we look at, we’ve got total confidence because we’ve got two really good centre-halves in Jason Pearce, club captain and I rate him so highly, and young Deji.

“Every confidence to put him on and what a great performance he put in for that half an hour. Really assured, great passing through the lines and good defensive work. He was really assured for that performance. Really pleased with that.”

There was no place in today’s matchday squad for George Dobson. The 23-year-old midfielder, who joined from Sunderland in the summer, had started every league game so far but was missing entirely from the matchday 18 today.

“I’ve got a squad of players, we’re trying to strengthen all round,” added Adkins. “I spoke with George yesterday. He was in the dressing room with all the players. We’ve got a group who were maybe not on the bench today. We’ve got another game to go on Tuesday [against Crawley in the EFL Trophy].

“I’m mindful of all of us and competition for places drives the performance. That’s what we need. I’m really pleased with George’s attitude, that’s not in question. We’re trying to help him. Everyone is trying to help each other. He’ll be starting the game on Tuesday.”
