AFC Wimbledon midfielder has extra incentive to knock Arsenal out of EFL Cup
AFC Wimbledon goal hero Anthony Hartigan has shared his delight at helping the club make history – after his late winner against Northampton Town last week clinched a money-spinning EFL Cup tie at Arsenal.
It seemed like the Dons were destined for penalties in their stalemate with the Cobblers before Hartigan popped up with a 30-yard strike in the dying moments of the game.
That win means Wimbledon will travel to Premier League giants Arsenal later this month.
“I’m buzzing to be fair,” Hartigan told the South London Press. “I haven’t scored for a while, so it was nice to get on the scoresheet, but more importantly get into the next round and get a good draw as well. We’re looking forward to that, but there’s so much more football to be played before then.”
The Dons midfielder admitted he watched the draw, even though it’s not something he usually enjoys – but is now looking forward to putting on a show at the Emirates in September.
In doing so, Mark Robinson’s side will make history by making the third round of the League Cup for the first time as AFC Wimbledon.
“I watched it at home. I don’t like watching draws, if I’m honest, but it’s something that we’re excited about. The club’s never been in the third round before, so we’re all buzzing about. We’re making more history and hopefully, we can go there and put on a show.”
And Hartigan will have an extra incentive to get one over on the Gunners.
“I’m a Chelsea boy. I think there might be a few [Arsenal fans in the Dons ranks]. I don’t really know to be fair, but I’m Chelsea so I’m buzzing. I watched Chelsea beat them 2-0 the other day so I was buzzing after that as well.
“We’ll definitely go there have a go.”
