Charlton Athletic sign Morecambe’s Sam Lavelle on three-year contract

Charlton Athletic have confirmed the signing of Morecambe captain Sam Lavelle.

The Addicks were given permission to discuss personal terms with the 24-year-old Blackpool-born centre-back after agreeing a fee in excess of £200,000. An initial offer had been rejected.

Lavelle arrived in South London this evening to wrap up his transfer. He has agreed a three-year contract.

He said: “I’m over the moon, when it came up a few days ago I was excited to come. The stature of the club is massive, the fanbase is huge, everything about it appealed to me.”

Charlton manager Nigel Adkins said: “We’re really pleased to welcome a talented player like Sam to the club. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard added: “I am delighted we’ve been able to bring in Sam. He’s a terrific young talent who makes us better in the short term and can develop and improve as we progress.”

Lavelle is the club’s 10th signing of the summer transfer window.

He played 165 matches for Morecambe after previously being on the books of Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.

Lavelle was Morecambe’s PFA Community Champion for both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 season
