Demand for step-free access to Haydons Road Station in Merton

Councillors and residents are fighting for step free access at a train station.

While the eastbound platform at Haydons Road station in Merton can be accessed without using steps, the westbound platform cannot, causing problems for many residents.

Local Lib Dems have launched a petition to fight for step-free access at the station.

Paul Kohler, Lib Dem Councillor for Trinity Ward, said: “Planning permission was only granted for the nearby development at 1 Caxton Road, on condition the developer provide step free access to the platform at Haydons Road.

“Although he is willing to do so, no progress has been made due to Govia Thameslink refusing to allow the works to start, citing concerns about
trespassing, vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

Resident Kirsten Galea said: “Every time I use Haydons Road station I am annoyed that there isn’t step free access to the Westbound platform.

Residents and visitors who can’t use the steps are having to go to Wimbledon and get a bus back, or a train to the Eastbound platform – it’s so frustrating for so many people.

“The work needed to enable step-free access in both directions at the station is minimal, and it would enable more residents to use public transport.”

Thameslink and Great Northern customer services director Jenny Saunders said: “We’d be delighted if the developer were able to provide step-free access through the new flats that have been built alongside the station, which we understand the council set out as a planning condition.

“However, for everyone’s safety, the route to the station must be safe, secure and appropriate for wheelchair users.

“We met with the developer in April 2019 and explained how we felt that the proposed plans for access, which is through a residential car park sharing a route used by vehicles, were not sufficient to meet these safety and security requirements.

“At that meeting, we shared with the developer what the requirements would be – a safe, segregated route, as well as a proper system of lighting
and CCTV.

“We will speak to the developer again to discuss their proposals further.”
