New seven day library confirmed for Catford

Readers will get a new seven-day library in their shopping centre from January.

Lewisham Council is opening the hub in Catford town centre, as the borough looks ahead to its year as the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture.

The plans will see a new seven-day a week library in Catford Shopping Centre, with services moving over from town hall offices at Laurence House.

The new library will be more accessible, with shoppers encouraged to pop in for a browse, to access services or take part in activities.

The space will be similar in size to the existing Catford Library and will offer improved services for residents, including more study space, new computers, improved Wi-Fi and flexible space for events and activities. Opening hours will increase to include Sundays, which was not possible at Laurence House.

The existing Catford Library has stayed closed as Laurence House, which accommodates most of the Council’s desk-based staff, has not fully reopened yet.

The building is set to be remodelled, including space for residents to meet with staff on the ground floor, when the library moves.

Work on the new library will begin in the coming weeks, and it is expected to open in the New Year.

Cllr Andre Bourne said: “I’m proud to confirm this investment, which demonstrates our commitment to this important community service.

“We know how important libraries are to many of our residents, so I’m excited that we’re moving Catford Library into the heart of the community.

The move is great news for Catford residents and businesses, and the timing couldn’t be better, as we approach our year as Borough of Culture, when our libraries will host some exciting and inspiring events.

“By moving to a new space the library can be more flexible and better provide the modern services residents tell us they want – such as study space, Wi-Fi access and new computers – as well as books, information and safe spaces to learn and enjoy.”

A notice outside Lawrence House should tell customers where the new Library will be from Jan 2022. I went into the Lawrence House building & asked Raymond, the Security Guard about it & he told me where it was going to be. The old WHSmith shop, which shut down completey.
