Dulwich Hamlet boss hoping for budget boost to hand better deal to former Fulham defender

Dulwich Hamlet manager Gavin Rose is hoping their budget can be increased after revealing that new signings Jaydn Mundle-Smith and Miquel Scarlett are just getting paid expenses.

Mundle-Smith, 21, who can play at centre-back or left-back, started off on Fulham’s books. Right-back Scarlett, 21, was released by Colchester in February.

Rose said: “They have trained with us for the past month and both are either not taking any more or just really small deals, expenses.

“I’m not sure how long we can keep them in the building because no-one can live on that. They are doing it because they want to see if they can get fixed up with us in the long run.

“They are very good lads with very good attitudes. I’m sure they will be assets.

“We have a small squad and when Sanchez [Ming] got injured early on we didn’t replace him because of the budget. I’m hoping the crowds being as big as they have been might mean we’re able to get one or two in, like those boys, to help us.

“When we do have Saturday-Tuesday games it is very hard to play the same 11, or even 13 or 14. You are going to need a little bit of squad depth.”

Rose looks set to make changes for tomorrow’s match at Chelmsford City after their 1-0 loss to Bedfont Sports in the FA Cup second qualifying round.

“Our general preparation in terms of respecting the opposition wasn’t great or respecting our fans, as well, because we had great numbers there,” said the Hamlet boss. “Some of the personnel will change because the performance wasn’t great, more so in terms of attitude.

“But we’ve also got to bear in mind that some players may still play because we have got no-one else to replace them with.”

Bromley are at Dover Athletic tomorrow in the National League.
