Charlton Athletic confirm Nigel Adkins’ exit – with Johnnie Jackson in caretaker charge
Charlton Athletic have parted company with manager Nigel Adkins. Johnnie Jackson will take caretaker charge and be assisted by Jason Euell.
It was expected that Tuesday night’s 3-2 loss against Accrington Stanley would be the final straw for the experienced boss – a result that leaves the Addicks languishing 22nd in the League One standings – their lowest position in their history – and four points adrift of safety.
Adkins was booed off the pitch at full-time and also at the break with fans urging owner Thomas Sandgaard, who flew in from the US to watch the match, to make a change.
Jackson has been assistant boss under both Adkins and predecessor Lee Bowyer. He was keen on the top job when Bowyer stepped down to take charge at Birmingham City in March – but the club’s hierarchy plumped for Adkins, who has won promotion three times from England’s third tier. Jackson had one match before that appointment, a 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers at The Valley.
Sandgaard told Charlton’s official website: “Nigel joined us at the end of last season and had an immediate impact, as we finished the season well, just missing out on a play-off place on goal difference. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to carry that form into this season.
“I’d like to thank Nigel for his hard work, positivity and continued professionalism during his time at the club. We are all disappointed that it hasn’t worked out this season and we wish him the very best for the future.”
Jackson will take training this morning and speak to the media this afternoon.
