Stephen Henderson set for Charlton Athletic action in FA Cup first round tie
Stephen Henderson is set to get his first start of the season in Charlton’s FA Cup first round tie against Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday.
The Irish goalkeeper has not featured for the South Londoners since returning in the summer following his release by Crystal Palace.
Henderson, 33, made 54 appearances for Charlton in his first spell before joining Nottingham Forest on a free transfer in the summer of 2016
Addicks caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson has confirmed he will make full use of his squad for the next two fixtures, with an EFL Trophy match at Leyton Orient on Tuesday to contend with as well.
The following weekend’s match against Burton Albion could go ahead. Clubs need three international call-ups to have the option to postpone a fixture. Chris Gunter has been selected by Wales and Conor Washington will be part of Northern Ireland’s squad but there are doubts if Harry Arter, who is available this weekend, will be picked by the Republic of Ireland.
“I’ve had quite a settled side in the last three games and we’ve got a big squad of players,” Jackson told the South London Press. “I will be trying to utilise the squad for the next two cup games. It’s important when you have got a squad like we have.
“Saturday is a chance to do that and still be able to put out a really srong team. I expect us to win the game. You respect the opposition, we’ll always do that, but I’ll give an opportunity to some of the lads who haven’t been in the team to show me that they should be.
“Harry is back in full training and he’ll be available. DJ [Diallang Jaiyesimi] wasn’t injured, it’s just his race was won. He had a bit of cramp towards the end [of the Rotherham game]. We got him off, but he’s fine.
“It is a great opportunity to give Hendo a game. He hasn’t had any minutes and is training well.”
