Charlton Athletic a coach down since Nigel Adkins’ exit – and Jason Euell away on England U20 duty

Johnnie Jackson has admitted that it has been a “tough week” for Charlton Athletic’s management team with Jason Euell away on England U20 duty.

The Addicks have played two fixtures without Euell – the FA Cup win over Havant & Waterlooville  and midweek EFL Trophy loss to Leyton Orient – while he carries out his duties with the young Three Lions. They play against Portugal in Leiria later this afternoon.

Jackson took caretaker charge at Charlton following the departure of Nigel Adkins with Euell stepping up from first-team coach to assistant manager. Anthony Hayes, appointed U23 senior professional lead development coach, then moved temporarily into Euell’s role.

“It’s been a tough week already, we’re a bit short coaching-wise with Jason being away,” Jackson told the South London Press. “It’s made the week even more full-on.

“Hayes assisted me for the game [at the weekend] and he assisted me on Tuesday night. A lot of that team was his group anyway, so it was important he was amongst it all. He will help me on the training pitch today.

“It’s been a bit of a challenge because since Nigel left then, in theory, we are a coach down.”
