Former Palace loan favourite has his say on Conor Gallagher’s senior England debut

Former England international Ashley Cole is very impressed with Crystal Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher’s “mentality”.

Cole, 40, made 14 appearances for the South London club while on loan from Arsenal in 2000.

Gallagher came on as a second-half substitute for the Three Lions as they smashed San Marino 10-0 on Monday night to clinch World Cup qualification in style.

Gallagher, whose first loan was at Charlton Athletic, has been a shining light for the Eagles this season. He had been on England U21 duty before withdrawals in the senior squad saw the 21-year-old promoted to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Cole said: “His mentality has been great. The call-up to the senior team has been coming. He has shown quality this season and is a big player for Palace.

“He is one of the leaders of the group and is very humble, willing to work and get better. He leads very well.

“It proves there is a pathway for these kids. Gareth is monitoring in this group. If you keep playing well and turning up here there is an opportunity for them.

“It is very difficult for managers to pluck young players from the 21’s and expect them to perform at a high level. Gareth sees them week in, week out. He is seeing them around the country.

“The pathway is there. These boys have to keep competing on Saturdays, keep the shirt on their back. The chances are there.”
