‘He’s playing like his heart bleeds Charlton’ – Elliot Lee praised after another classy display in win over Plymouth

Johnnie Jackson reckons Elliot Lee plays “like his heart bleeds Charlton” after the Luton loanee put in another impressive display in the South London club’s 2-0 win over Plymouth today.

Lee, the son of former Valley fans’ favourite Robert, produced a superb through ball for Conor Washington to finish off in the 84th minute and seal victory over Argyle.

“It’s a great goal all round,” said Addicks caretaker boss Jackson. “A counter attack….and that’s Elliot Lee’s quality. We know he can do that, he’s been doing it consistently for me. But it’s the other side of the game that he is doing.

“He’s been outstanding – the work-rate you’re getting. He’s on loan to us but he’s playing like his heart bleeds Charlton. You can’t ask any more.

“It’s a wonderful finish from Conor. I’m pleased he got his goal. I knew he’d score today. He was so sharp in training yesterday. I said: ‘Save one, will you?’ He saved one and won the game for us in the end.”

Washington has scored in the last three league matches. And the Northern Ireland international still had the energy to surge forward near the end, only to fail to get a clean enough connection on his shot.

“I was shouting at him to run it in the corner and run the clock down but he sniffed out another goal – he fancied himself,” said Jackson. “That’s strikers for you, especially when they are confident. He thought he had another chance to score, and he nearly did.”
