Former Palace defender Gareth Southgate extends England contract

Gareth Southgate says it is a “privilege” to manage England after he signed a new contract to keep him in the role until 2024.

The former Crystal Palace defender has been in charge of the Three Lions since November 2016. His previous contract was due to expire after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 51-year-old led England to the semi finals of the 2018 World Cup before guiding them to the final of the European Championships last summer – their best men’s performance in 55 years.

“It remains an incredible privilege to lead this team. We have a great opportunity in front of us,” said Southgate.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players and support team for their hard work. I know they and the fans are all excited about what this squad could achieve in the future.”

Assistant manager Steve Holland has also agreed a new contract to cover the same period.

Southgate, who has won 44 out of his 68 matches in charge, will reportedly earn up to £6million a year.
