Two huge blazes in just two days
Firefighters fought two huge blazes in South-east London last week.
Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters were called to a 20-storey high-rise development in Elmira Street, Lewisham, as a blaze broke out in a flat on the 13th floor.
Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan has asked those investigating the fire to address reports that fire alarms did not go off in the building.
Most of the balcony and part of a four-roomed flat were damaged.
A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said that a sprinkler system fitted within the flat helped to suppress the fire.
The LFB’s 999 Control Officers took 16 calls to the fire.
They were called out at 4.14am on Thursday, June 14. The blaze continued for more than an hour before it was brought under control at 5.23am.
The fire is believed to be accidental and due to the careless disposal of smoking materials.
Firefighters from Lee Green, Deptford, New Cross, Forest Hill, Lewisham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
Another blaze broke out in a house in Sidcup the following day, June 15.
Four fire engines and 21 firefighters responded to the fire in Ramillies Road. A man left the property before fire crews arrived. He was suffering from smoke inhalation and treated by paramedics. The LFB was called at 1.54pm and the fire was under control by 3.36pm. Fire crews from Plumstead, Bexley and Sidcup fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
