Former Palace and Charlton strikers set to make draw for next round of EFL Trophy

Charlton Athletic will find out their last-16 opponents in the EFL Trophy on Saturday afternoon.

The Addicks knocked Aston Villa U21s out of the competition on Tuesday night at The Valley.

Mason Burstow punished poor positioning by goalkeeper Oliwier Zych to put the Addicks into a 15th-minute lead.

Finley Thorndike equalised for the Premier League’s development side but Jayden Stockley marked his return from suspension by converting from the penalty spot.

The draw for the next round is still regionalised with the likes of Chelsea U21s, Milton Keynes and Sutton United all potential opponents. It will be live on Sky Sports following Coventry’s home game against West Brom.

Former Crystal Palace striker Kevin Phillips and Jay Bothroyd, who had a short spell with the Addicks between 2005 and 2006,will draw the teams out.

There will be 16 clubs involved in the next stage of the competition with the draw split into Northern and Southern sections. Matches will be played the week commencing January 3.

Caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson said: “The most important thing is that we got through to the next round. There were some good performances in there and, at times, some good football.

Jayden Stockley scores from the penalty spot

“It was a great finish by Mason and great movement as well on that top line, it causes defenders problems. He came off with a little bit of cramp. He got it after 50 minutes at Leyton Orient and 65 on Tuesday. He’s going in the right direction, maybe he’ll get 80 in his legs the next time.”

Next up for Charlton is an FA Cup second round tie at National League North side Gateshead tomorrow. The Heed have won all five of their home league matches this season and the tie is live on ITV4.

“It is a potential banana skin and the broadcasters are probably hoping for that,” said Jackson. “Being one of the bigger teams in the FA Cup at this stage, you have to deal with that pressure.

“If we turn up with the right attitude we’ll progress. If we don’t we’ll get what we deserve.”
