Charlton Athletic not set for any transfer windfall if Joe Aribo – linked to Palace – leaves Rangers

Joe Aribo has been linked with a return to England – with Crystal Palace one of three clubs mooted as admirers of the former Charlton midfielder.

The Camberwell-born 25-year burst on to the pro scene with the Addicks but opted to quit after their promotion to the Championship in 2019.

Aribo turned down a contract extension to leave on a free transfer for Rangers. And because he chose to move cross border it meant hugely reduced compensation as well as no chunky sell-on.

Charlton would be entitled to a FIFA training solidarity payment but that is small change.

The Daily Mail claim that Brentford and Watford are also keen on Aribo, a box-to-box midfielder who has scored 21 goals in 116 appearances for the Glasgow giants.

The paper adds that Aribo’s contract situation – his deal expires in 18 months – has left Rangers more vulnerable to any concrete interest.

The South Londoner is in his third season north of the border and was a key component of Steven Gerrard’s side as they won the Scottish Premiership title last season to break Celtic’s stranglehold.

He also has a runners up medal in the Scottish League Cup in the 2019-20 season.

Lee Bowyer felt Aribo had made a wrong choice after opting to join Rangers.

“It’s a shame if he gets pushed to somewhere where it is not going to benefit him in his football career,” Bowyer, then Charlton boss, told the South London Press.

“They might go from Rangers to the Championship, very rarely is it to the Premier League. For me he should stay in England and keep progressing. The move should benefit Joe.”

Aribo has been capped 11 times by Nigeria.
