Charlton’s Johnnie Jackson has no intention of enduring a first ever giant-killing in FA Cup

Johnnie Jackson was never on the end of an FA Cup upset as a player and hopes that isn’t about to change tomorrow night when he takes Charlton Athletic to National League North side Gateshead.

The Addicks’ tie will be televised on ITV4 with a place in the third round of the famous old competition at stake.

Jackson, named the club’s caretaker boss on October 21 following the departure of Nigel Adkins, admits he has been on the end of some painful results as a player.

“It wasn’t a giant-killing but we [Charlton] lost in the quarter-final when we were a Championship side and Sheffield United were in League One,” he said. “And I had some other drama – I played in the 4-3 game when Tottenham lost to Manchester City [in 2004]. We were 3-0 up at half-time.

“I’m going to take Gateshead very seriously. Being a Friday night it gives us extra time before our next league fixture. I’ll be playing a strong team. Whether I make changes? We’ll see what comes out of this week’s training and Tuesday’s match.

“They [Gateshead] are decent. I’ve watched a fair bit of them. They try and play and they want to get it down. We have to go there with the right attitude. If we do that then our quality should prevail. These are the sort of places you can come unstuck – especially when they’ve got a good home record.”
