London lags behind in booster race

By Alastair Lockhart, Local Democracy Reporter

London has the lowest booster vaccine uptake in the country.

In Westminster, just one in five people have been triple-jabbed, compared to the national average of 40 per cent.

Booster jabs are being rolled out rapidly in an attempt to combat the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

But many parts of London are way behind.

Almost all of the least-vaccinated local authorities in the UK are in the capital, according to official government figures.

Out of the bottom 10 authorities for vaccinations, eight are in London, with a number of other boroughs in the capital with unusually low uptake.

Tower Hamlets and Newham are the worst offenders – followed by Hackney and the City of London, Barking and Dagenham, Westminster, Islington and Camden.

The UK Government has urged everyone over the age of 18 to get their booster vaccine as soon as possible to best combat the new variant.

Omicron is already the dominant Covid variant in the capital just weeks after it was first discovered in Southern Africa.
