String of Greenwich leisure centres to get revamp in £500,000 investment

By Adam Perry

Gym enthusiasts will have much better equipment this year after a revamp of leisure centres.

Customers at a range of centres in Greenwich will have a total of £500k spent on their refurbs.

Users of the gyms and studios at the Thamesmere Leisure Centre and Eltham Centre will see new decoration, lighting, kit and more.

The Eltham Centre will also get a state-of-the-art group cycle studio with 55 bikes and ‘always-on’ virtual classes as well as a new steam room to replace the 15-year-old one.

Younger children will be able to use an expanded soft play feature at Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre, where an extension is being made for older children as well.

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equality, said: ‘the health and wellbeing of our residents is more important than ever and these improvements will provide top class leisure facilities.’

The Waterfront Leisure Centre, Greenwich Centre, Coldharbour Leisure Centre and Plumstead Centre will also be refreshed in some areas.

Many people have become less active and less confident in the wake of the COVID pandemic. According to GLL Partnership Manager Richard Gallagher, these changes are meant to ‘help the wider recovery in health and opportunity.’ This big investment was made with the hope of drawing in more customers and getting those who have not been in a while to return.
