Clean-up on streets usually clogged with parked cars gets thumbs up from locals

Heavily parked residential side roads across Bexley are the focus of the council’s latest initiative to help the borough look its best.

Since the beginning of the month, Bexley council and its contractor Serco have made a concerted effort to sweep some side roads that normally cannot be cleaned properly due to parked cars.

The council put up notices and wrote to residents in selected roads in Belvedere, Bexleyheath, Erith, Northumberland Heath, Sidcup and Welling, asking them to keep their roads clear on the days the
council’s cleaning team arrived to clean up.

After its third week, the response from residents has been very positive and many roads are showing the benefit of their clean sweep.

Cabinet member Councillor Peter Craske watched the deep clean of South Gypsy Road in Welling on Monday, October 23.

He said: “We’re more than half-way through the deep clean and I am really grateful to residents for the way they have worked with us to help bring their streets up to standard.

“We know how much local people value having clean streets.

“So I am delighted that our good financial management has meant we have been able to find the money for this initiative.”

Work on the deep clean will continue though until next Monday, November 6.
