Lewisham’s Alex Yee named in England’s triathlon team for this summer’s Commonwealth Games

Lewisham’s Alex Yee has been named as part of England’s triathlon team for the home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer.

The 23-year-old is one of three Olympic gold medal winners selected.

Yee won the silver medal in the men’s triathlon in Tokyo at the end of July and followed up with a gold in the mixed relay.

The South Londoner also finished first in the World Triathlon Championship Series in Leeds last year.

Triathlon will be the first medal event on the programme at Birmingham 2022, taking place at Sutton Park.

Yee said: “I’m delighted to be selected. Birmingham was always a target of mine, and I can’t wait to compete in a major championship at home. I know the crowd will be brilliant and give us a real advantage.”

Team England’s chef de mission Mark England said: “It’s brilliant to announce Team England’s first four athletes for Birmingham 2022 all of whom are world leading triathletes, and really exciting to be medal competitive from day one. A home Games is a truly special event to be involved in and I’d like to congratulate the athletes on their selection.”
