Addicks boss Bowyer: First half at Welling United was not good enough

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Bowyer was unhappy at Charlton Athletic’s first-half showing in today’s 2-1 friendly win at Welling United.

Lyle Taylor’s late second-half goal secured the win for the Addicks.

Addicks caretaker manager Bowyer said: “The goals are not that important but they got minutes under their belt.

“It was the opposite of QPR the other weekend. The most important thing is we didn’t get any injuries.

“The first-half team wasn’t good enough. The four midfielder did okay, they were the only four that could hold their head up in the first half. It’s harsh but true. I told the lads that they have set their standards and shown that last week, so why didn’t they do that here?

“The first half wasn’t good enough and the second half was a bit better. We have standards and they weren’t there today.”

Charlton look set to take another look at trialists Simon Dawkins and Elliott Ward in next week’s friendlies against Cambridge United on Tuesday and Wednesday’s trip to face Dulwich Hamlet at the KNK Stadium.

“Ward only came in and started on Monday, so he only had a couple of days training with us. We need to see him in games, not training.

“They are both on trial and we’ll make the right decision for the club.”
