Welling United boss Steve King: Charlton Athletic goal should not have stood

Welling United boss Steve King felt Lyle Taylor’s winner in the 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic on Saturday should have been struck off.

The Addicks’ summer signing reacted quickest to convert when Jake Forster-Caskey’s free-kick came down off the bar.

But King told Welling’s YouTube channel: “One hundred per cent it was offside.

“He started offside and he finished the goal offside. I was disappointed with that. I thought there were a few decisions like that, which probably went both way. That’s gone now.

“We’ll concentrate on the positives. The positive is we gave a good account of ourselves and we could’ve scored at the end – Bradley [Goldberg] had a great chance to score.

“It was a good workout.”

Goldberg played the full 90 minutes and King admits he is still keen to boost his frontline options.

“We’re a little light up top at the moment. It’s still one area we need to strengthen.

“We have done a lot of fitness work with the balls still out and we need to up those levels of fitness, which we will. It is a new group and it’s going to take time.

“Come the start of the season, everyone will be familiar about what we do and the way we want to play.”
