AFC Wimbledon boss gives his verdict on 0-0 draw at Gillingham

Mark Robinson felt AFC Wimbledon did not deserve any more than a point in their 0-0 draw against Gillingham last night.

The Dons are now winless in 14 League One games after their draw against the Kent club.

Terry Ablade was so close to winning it for Wimbledon however, when his spectacular overhead kick hit the crossbar with five minutes remaining.

Robinson said: “We did show some character, we dug in at the end there. We put our bodies on the line, but again there was still a lack of quality, So we need to find that quality, which I’m confident we will.

“Sometimes getting a point like that can be the catalyst for getting something else. Performance wasn’t great but you take the point because we didn’t deserve any more than that.

“It was [heroic defending] at the end. They send those long throws in there and corners and they’re a threat. But neither team created a lot in open play.

“It was just a very bitty game and it looked like two teams struggling with a bit of confidence. So right here and now, we will take a point but we need to kick on from that and get back to getting that swagger. It’s difficult when you’re where we are but I know we can do it.

“We just didn’t think we were carrying enough of a threat, we looked to change it up with Terry Ablade and Aaron Pressley and it was a great effort [from Ablade when he hit the bar]. It was one of the few bits of quality in the game.

“There’s 11 teams that have lost the same number of games as us. But it’s the draws that have killed us. That’s 14 draws now, three or four of those are wins – which they should’ve been comfortably – then we’re not having this conversation.

“We do that by belief [getting back to winning ways]. When you’re a young side we have to keep them believing, the mental side of the game is absolutely massive. It’s about getting that belief back into them. Once we get that first win I’m confident we’re capable of going on a run.”
