‘We were the better team by a mile’ – Gillingham boss Harris left frustrated by stalemate against AFC Wimbledon
Neil Harris reckoned Gillingham had enough chances against AFC Wimbledon that they could have won “two or three” games of football.
The Dons drew 0-0 with the Gills last night in a crucial clash at the bottom end of the League One table.
Gillingham were the team in the ascendancy for the majority of the game and saw a goalmouth scramble cleared off the line multiple times with seconds of the game remaining.
“I am not quite sure how it finishes 0-0,” said Harris. “It is the best we have played with the football since I have been here, it was edgy and scrappy at times and the real moments of quality came from us.
“Our build-up play was good and we were getting in good areas. We had enough chances to win two or three games of football.
“We played on the front foot, we certainly had a reaction from Saturday which I asked from the players and promised the fans. We just couldn’t get the ball in the net, could we? That has been the story of the season, not just in the last few games.
“I expected him [Vadaline Oliver] to score and he would have expected it himself, it was a great ball in, Ben Thompson put some cracking balls in and some of the individual performances were outstanding.
“Collectively as a team, it is the most sustained pressure we have had. We could build attack after attack and get into good areas, Ryan Jackson’s energy was excellent and his pace really helped the team.
“The scramble at the end probably summed it up, we probably could have scored three goals in the last 15 seconds, but it wasn’t to be and you have to praise them for throwing their bodies on the line. I can’t bemoan my players again, attitude, some quality we added to our performance that has been missing in the past, we were the better team by a mile.
“Overall, the disappointment is that we haven’t won the game, that is a good place to be as a manager. It wasn’t that we have conceded poor goals or anything, we should have won that game and the only disappointment is that we did enough to win at least one, if not two games football.
“Is it a positive? Yes, eight points from six games is a positive for the team, the damage was done in the first half of the season and that is why we are disappointed afterwards, if not we would look at that as a really strong performance and we just couldn’t score. From my perspective seven points from four games at Priestfield is a good return.”
