Dons boss: Former Southend man would have been out of our price range if he was 23

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley reckons the club would have been unlikely to land Anthony Wordsworth if the midfielder had been five or six years younger.

The Dons have a plan this summer of bringing in younger talent but have added experience with the capture of Wordsworth, 29, on a free transfer following his release by Southend United.

Ardley also told the South London Press last week that former Charlton winger Scott Wagstaff, 28, was also a little above their ideal age for signings.

“Anthony still fitted our profile in that we wanted somebody who gives us a bit more attacking freedom and can add goals.

“Anthony’s scoring record has been one in every four games over the last couple of seasons. He is a very, very good player. If he was 23 then we probably wouldn’t get him.

“But he is still in his prime.”
