Marc Guehi on Crystal Palace captaincy and ‘important’ win over Wolves

Marc Guehi says that it is a “huge honour” for him to be Crystal Palace captain after wearing the armband for the second time in the Premier League in the 2-0 win at Wolves.

Guehi joined in the summer from Chelsea and has played the full 90 minutes of every game he has started this season.

The 21-year-old, who is also captain of the England U21 side, made five clearances and won two aerial duels as the Eagles secured their seventh clean sheet of the campaign.

The Eagles scored two first-half goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Wilfried Zaha at Molineux as they picked up their third away win in the Premier League.

“It’s a very important win for us – a good result,” said Guehi.

“It was a good collective team performance, especially defensively, and then obviously when the boys up front are taking their chances, it helps.

“It’s really important for us to start games well, and when we start like that, it can be a catalyst for the rest of the game. The boys were excellent today – their pressing made it easier for us at the back.

“It’s good for us to keep the clean sheet at the back, which is always important. It’s good confidence for the boys up front to get the goals. Hopefully we can keep this up.

“We always put pressure on ourselves to do well, regardless of who we are playing and regardless of the circumstances. Wolves have been doing very well at the moment, so it’s very important for us and very good for us to get the win.”

Speaking on being handed the captaincy by Vieira, Guehi added: “It’s a huge honour for me to be here, and it’s not something the gaffer just gave to me like that.

“I feel like the boys have really taken to me, and the senior lads have allowed me to be captain as well. That comes from them as well – they’ve seen something in me. I’m really proud.”
