London Transport Museum launches a new season of Hidden London tours
For the first time in two years, members of the public will get the chance to explore underground tunnels used by South Londoners to escape the Blitz.
London Transport Museum is launching a new season of Hidden London tours, which take visitors to secret locations across the capital’s Underground network that are usually off limits to the public, including the deep level shelter at Clapham South.
Opened to the public in July 1944, Clapham South deep-level shelter has over a mile of subterranean passageways.
The tour will reveal the stories of those who sheltered here, from Londoners seeking refuge during the Second World War, to Caribbean migrants arriving on the Empire Windrush, and even thrifty visitors to the Festival of Britain.
In person tours of Aldwych, Charing Cross, Down Street, Euston, Moorgate and Piccadilly Circus disused stations and tunnels are also available, offering visitors the chance to explore underground locations with unique stories to tell about London’s past.
