‘We’re not really talking about it’ – Benik Afobe staying calm despite Millwall boosting play-off prospects

Benik Afobe insisted there has been no talk of the Championship play-offs in the Millwall camp despite an excellent 2-0 win over Huddersfield last night boosting their promotion hopes.

The Lions are unbeaten in eight league matches and Afobe was voted Sky Sports’ Man of the Match after scoring both goals as they ran out convincing victors at The Den.

Afobe told the broadcaster: “We said before the game that Huddersfield had been on an unbelievable run. For us it was just about winning the game and keeping solid, like we have been of late.

“Thankfully I scored two and we won.

“I haven’t had many shots in recent games so today I just thought to myself that, for the sake of the team, we need to start shooting more and create chances when the game is a bit quiet. That’s what we did today. It wasn’t just me who had a few chances. We looked good. It was an all-round performance and we deserved the 2-0 win.

“We’re not really talking about it [the play-offs]. We’re taking it game by game and enjoying our football. It’s a great bunch of lads here – good staff and good fans – we’re working hard and just enjoying ourselves. Today there was no mention of getting nearer to the top six. It was just win the game, work hard and everything else will fall into place.

“We’ve got a hard game against Stoke away, then we’ve got a break and got a few lads coming back from injuries. We’re just looking to finish strongly. Whatever happens come May, if we’ve worked hard, we might have a shout.”

Afobe is ineligible to face his parent club Stoke City this weekend as part of his loan agreement.

But Millwall left wing-back Scott Malone admitted that confidence is sky high with the South Londoners’ top of the form guide in the Championship.

“That’s up there as one of the best performances this season against a team in the top three,” said Malone. “That’s getting on for eight hours without conceding a goal now. We’re well in the mix. That was tremendous from the boys.

“We’re closing in. We go again Saturday, away at Stoke. If we win that, we’re right in the mix.”
