Women’s football: City slickers inflict defeat on Charlton Athletic

A brace from Karin Muya secured all three points for London City Lionesses against Charlton Athletic in the FA Women’s Championship.

A goal at the end of each half from Muya was the difference as the home side dominated affairs in Dartford from start to finish.

Charlton had the first chance of the game after 12 minutes, Katie Robinson firing wide after being played in by Jess King.

The Lionesses saw most of the ball in the first half and had a good chance just before the break, Brooke Nunn was played through on goal by Katie Kitching only to shoot straight at Eartha Cumings.

The hosts got their reward on the stroke of half-time. Muya converted after a strong run by Jamie-Lee Napie.

City looked to extend their lead after the break, Amy Rodgers going close just after the hour after being fed by Muya.

Substitute Shanade Hopcroft had a chance to extend City’s lead almost immediately after coming on but failed to convert on the volley.

Charlton continued to search for an equaliser and had a chance to do so three minutes from time, but Robinson could only fire at Yanez in the Lionesses’ goal.

Muya sealed the three points for the hosts with a goal at the death, pouncing upon a defensive error to poke home for her second of the afternoon.
