Gary Rowett assesses Millwall’s play-off prospects after latest round of Championship action – Fulham helps but Forest have momentum

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has given his take on the club’s top-six hopes after the latest round of midweek matches in the Championship.

Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 win over Coventry on Wednesday night moved them up to fifth in the table, Middlesbrough dropping out of the play-off zone after a 1-0 home reverse to leaders Fulham.

It means that the Lions are six points behind sixth-placed Sheffield United – effectively seven unless there is a fairly dramatic goal swing, with six games to go.

Millwall can finish on 76 points if they win all of their remaining fixtures but are looking to bounce back from a 1-0 home reverse to Swansea on Tuesday.

Next up is Barnsley in SE16 on Saturday.

“I said after the game [against Swansea] that we’d get to the end of Wednesday night and I didn’t think it would change that much,” said Rowett. “There are a couple of those clubs that have not got away. Forest were always the ones with a little bit of momentum and games in hand – you can’t stop them if they win those games.

“Good luck to them. We’ve had that opportunity in the last couple of weeks and not done that.

“If you go and win the game Saturday and teams don’t then suddenly you’re back in the mix. Our job is to win our games and see where it takes us.

“I said it three games ago, if other teams win their games then realistically we’re not going to be able to catch them. I don’t think that’s a disgrace, it’s just the way it is. We have to go out there and do the business.

“On Tuesday we had more than enough chances to get something out of the game but we didn’t manage to do that. We’ll have to be a little more clinical and take those chances on Saturday if we want to start winning games of football.”
