No comeback this time as Welling United lose 4-0 at home to Dorking

On Good Friday, Welling United came back from a three-goal half-time deficit, but they were unable to repeat the trick when hosting Dorking Wanderers on Easter Monday.
Although competitive in the opening exchanges, Dorking controlled the match to win 4-0 and cement their place in second place. For Welling, they only escaped going back to the foot of the table due to basement club Billericay Town’s defeat at Chelmsford Town.
James McShane should have put Dorking Wanderers ahead inside the first 20 seconds, but he fired just over before a Tom Derry flick went wide at the other end.
Jordan Cheadle crossed for McShane, but his header was saved by Coniah Boyce-Clarke before the visitors went ahead just shy of the 15-minute mark. Alfie Rutherford was sent clear, and he shot across goal and just inside the far post.
Dipo Akinyemi met a near post Alfie Matthews corner but could not turn it home before Boyce-Clarke made an excellent save after Rutherford had worked his way through. Nicky Wheeler combined with Rutherford to create an opening, but his shot struck Boyce-Clarke and flew up, struck the bar, and out to safety.
Derry headed on a long pass forward, but it would not come down for Harvey Bradbury and he could only hook over but Dorking came close again when Jamie Sendles-White cleared off the line with Jason Prior ready to pounce.
Dan Gallagher headed wide before Dorking scored a second. Prior squared and Rutherford slotted home from one yard out.
Rutherford completed his hat-trick in first half injury time when given room in the area to squeeze a shot under Boyce-Clarke.
An enforced half-time substitution and a double change five minutes into the second half did not yield the same result for Warren Feeney’s Wings as they had achieved on Good Friday as Dorking were happy to contain them.
Wheeler fired over on the turn before Akinyemi flashed a shot wide for the Wings. Ben Allen blasted high and wide, but Dorking scored again deep into injury time. Luke Moore delivered a corner and Davide Rodari rose highest to head home.
Welling are again at Park View Road on Saturday, searching for the win that will give them breathing space.
