Image of Stephen Lawrence projected on to university building to mark anniversary of death

Friday marked the second annual Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation projection at the University of Greenwich to commemorate the anniversary of his death.

The university projected an image of the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation logo on to the side of one of the iconic parts of the university’s Greenwich campus – the Queen Anne building.

Stephen Lawrence Day was first celebrated in 2019 and takes place annually on April 22, the date of Stephen’s death.

The day is marked officially in the British calendar as a celebration of Stephen’s life and legacy. This year marks 29 years since his death.

The foundation was set up in response to his death at the hands of racist attackers and is a promoter of positive change in attitudes and community relations.

The partnership between the foundation and the university was established after Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Stephen’s mother, completed a degree in humanities at Greenwich in 1995.

The university also has a building and gallery named in Stephen’s honour.

“Stephen’s legacy for change speaks to our values and we are honoured to collaborate with the foundation to put on the projection to ensure that the message of a fairer society to all is always at the forefront of our minds.”
