Rugby union: Blackheath must beat Cinderford to stand any chance of staying in National League 1

Blackheath must win at Cinderford tomorrow to stand any chance of avoiding relegation from National League 1.

Club are the longest continuous tenant at that level – 18 years – since gaining promotion in 2004.

But Leeds Tykes leapfrogged them after a 30-15 victory at Darlington Mowden Park a week ago and have taken 10 points from their last two matches.

The Yorkshire club have two fixtures remaining, at Taunton tomorrow before hosting Cinderford on May 7, and are two points clear of Blackheath.

National League 1 is the only one to have relegation this season due to re-structuring from next season.

Ealing Trailfinders withdrew their appeal against exclusion from the Premiership last Friday, confirming there will be two relegation places at Blackheath’s level.

Only Tonbridge Juddians are below Club in the standings.

James Shanahan (pictured) is expected to remain as Blackheath head coach regardless of the season’s outcome.
