Millwall making no decision yet on goalkeeper’s future

Millwall will discuss David Martin’s future in the coming weeks – with boss Neil Harris pointing out that Tom King’s development is also in his thoughts.

The Lions brought in former Milton Keynes stopper Martin after the summer transfer window closed on a short-term contract until January.

But first-choice Jordan Archer has been an ever-present in the Championship, with his displays seeing the former Tottenham youngster break into the senior Scotland squad.

Martin has been preferred to King, who had been Archer’s understudy last season, on the bench this season.

Harris said: “David has been a breath of fresh air. Not just to the squad, but the goalkeeping department. He has brought experience and maturity which has rubbed off really well on Jordan, Tom and also young keepers like Harry Girling and Ryan Sandford.

“He is an excellent trainer and a top, top professional. He is exactly like his brother Joe when it comes to professionalism.

“It’s not just about whether we want to keep David. I’ve got to think about Tom King, who I think is an excellent young keeper – he proved that last season. We have to make sure there is the right pathway for him to carry on as a player.

“We’ve also got to be mindful of David’s mindset and the fact he wants to be playing week in and week out. Jordan’s form has been the best of his career.

“David wanted to be in the league above where he had been playing. He was backing his ability if an opportunity arose that he’d be able to take it. That has not happened because of Jordan’s form and fitness.”
