Decision not to start Jed Wallace pays off as Millwall attacker the architect for two of their goals
Millwall manager Gary Rowett’s call not to start Jed Wallace paid off in today’s 3-0 win over Peterborough United.
The Lions attacker had missed recent matches due to a groin injury.
But Wallace was back on the bench this afternoon and came off it produce the crosses for Josh Knight to put into his own net and then for George Saville to head in at the back post.
Rowett said: “It was a funny one because he trained for the last couple of days. I think he was desperate to be out there for the last home game. There have been a couple of things said, but I didn’t feel he was completely fit. And therefore I had a decision to make. If I start him in a tight game and I’ve got to bring him off on 60 minutes then I just lose all that quality when we need it. So I did it the other way around.
“We could work hard, see if we could nick something early on and open the game up that way. But we had lots of quality to chase it late on. The fact I could bring on Jed and Mason [Bennett] with 40 minutes left to play was a clear sign that we needed goals and were prepared to take a gamble to get those goals.
“His end product and his final delivery, we know is absolutely top drawer. It was nice to see him play such a big part and we’ll see what happens in the last game.”
