Thomas Sandgaard has dismissed claims that he is looking to sell Charlton Athletic as “hilarious”.
Andrew Barclay, who had previously been keen to buy the club and also The Valley and training ground off Roland Duchatelet, tweeted yesterday reacting to suggestions that the League One outfit were up for sale.
“Rumours of #cafc being up for sale (again) already are unfortunate,” tweeted Barclay. “I fear this will be a constant cycle until the stadium & operating club are under the same ownership umbrella. This is the fault of the authorities, whose negligence is enabling the destruction of our game.
“It is also true that all football clubs are “for sale” and there are always rumours of a club being on the market This is because the underlying model is completely bust – especially for championship and lower leagues. This proves my point that the authorities are to blame.
“I do fear that the government led review, like the childcare review, is purely for optics and nothing will be done. There needs to be radical reform and regulation to save #thebeautifulgame & all communities to which it is at the heart of.”
But when asked for a response by the South London Press, US-based Danish businessman Sandgaard said: “That’s hilarious. No, not for sale. Must be someone wanting the fans to think there’s not stability in the club.”
Sandgaard acquired the football club in September 2020 – at the time he extended the lease on the club’s stadium and training ground, which is still owned by Duchatelet.
Barclay dropped out of the running to try and do a deal with Duchatelet, making it clear he would only proceed if he owned every aspect of the football club.
