Millwall’s Gary Rowett moves up two places – to 16th – in longest-serving manager’s list

The latest moves in the managerial merry-go-round have moved Gary Rowett up to the 16th longest-serving boss in England’s top four divisions.

The 48-year-old was appointed by Millwall in October 2019.

And confirmation that Mark Warburton and Tony Mowbray are leaving their jobs at QPR and Blackburn this summer has shifted Rowett up two spots.

The only Championship bosses to have longer stints than Rowett are Coventry City’s Mark Robins and Rotherham United’s Paul Warne, who have both been in charge more than five years.

“I’ve loved my time at the club and living in London,” said Rowett, who succeeded Neil Harris.

“John [Berylson], the owner, has been absolutely fantastic since I’ve been here. That has been one of the reasons I’ve been so happy here.

“But the people around the club are great, the staff and players work incredibly hard. It is a really good club and a really good culture that we’ve created. We’ve got some challenges this summer. When you have been at a place a while you’ve got to find different ways to freshen it up, for yourself and the team. We’ll have to look to do that.

“I’m proud that I’ve been here nearly as long as any other club I’ve managed. I might have been slightly longer at Burton but I was [also] there [initially] as an assistant.

“I’ve got no plans for anything different and my focus is on how we get better.”

Rowett was nominated for the Championship Manager of the Month award for April – with Forest’s Steve Cooper winning it.

The Lions took 12 points from seven matches and netted 14 goals in that month, their best scoring run of the campaign.

He was also shortlisted for the honour in February.
