Ramblers will be Enabled in bid to boost health and happiness levels

The not-for-profit group Enable are all set to take over the management and delivery of the Lewisham Healthy Walks scheme.

The programme is part of the national Ramblers Walks for Wellbeing programme and has operated to great success locally for 20 years, helping thousands of local people become more active in that time.

The completely free programme of volunteer-led walks, takes place across Lewisham’s parks and green spaces.

The walks are free and led by trained volunteer leaders in parks and communities across the borough. They are tailored to the participant’s fitness needs with a focus on wellbeing, health, community, and the great outdoors.

Many participants are new to exercise, recovering from health issues or are nervous of movement. Others are more experienced and use the programme to keep their fitness levels up and progress them further – Lewisham Healthy Walks is an inclusive space where everyone is welcome.

The aim is to improve physical and mental wellbeing by managing or preventing a range of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Walking also brings increased energy levels, improved mood and sleep and reduced stress and tension, not forgetting the all-important social benefits – walks will often end with a cup of tea and more chat.

As a community-focused organisation, Enable’s ethos is to partner and collaborate with other experts including councils, charities, and organisations within the voluntary and community sector, with the aim of delivering better outcomes for local people.

Enable’s Head of Health and Wellbeing, Nick Atkins said: ‘We are excited to be managing Lewisham Healthy Walks, and are looking forward to meeting the Lewisham community, bringing our skills and knowledge to the area allowing us to reach more people in our aim of improving the wellbeing of communities throughout London.

“We’ve had great results through our programmes in Wandsworth and look forward to sharing that success with Lewisham.”

Lewisham is ideal for the Wellbeing Walks with its award winning parks and green spaces, riverside strolls and woodland to enjoy.

The walks on offer range in both distance and pace so, all participants will be able to find a group and challenge level that is right for them.

Whether you want to enjoy the wonder of Horniman Gardens, take in the beautiful Ravensbourne River, or explore the historic Crystal Palace Park; there is a walk and community for everyone.
